Life is full of lessons.

Some of them are about survival, safety, and comfort. Others revolve around who you are and where your place is in God’s story.

This list of four lessons God has been teaching me can inspire you to reflect on and lean into the lessons you’re learning.

1. God’s Timing Isn’t the Same as Mine, and That’s Okay

If I had it my way, my novel would be polished, my school year would’ve ended sooner, and I would be bolder in my faith by now.

But it’s not that way.

We like to say things like “it should’ve been different,” but we can’t see the full picture—only God can. He’s perfectly orchestrating our lives for good (Jeremiah 29:11).

God uses waiting seasons to prepare us. Imagine if David had been thrown in front of Goliath without the experience of being a shepherd, defending his sheep against wild animals and relying on God—it probably wouldn’t have ended well.

Instead, God used David’s time off the battlefield and in the pasture to grow his faith.

How is God using your waiting season to prepare you?

2. Time Is Precious

The average lifespan is somewhere around seventy to eighty years. Compared to eternity, that’s nothing but a blink of time.

Recently, I learned the Latin phrase Memento mori, which translates to “Remember you must die.” It’s a little on-the-nose (don’t dwell on it too much), but serves as an important reminder that this world is not our home. We are nothing but ambassadors, and whenever we’re called home, there are no second chances to change things here.

So, what will you do in this limited time?

3. Prayer Is Special

You have a personal connection with the Creator of the Universe.

Imagine being fully known by one of your friends—all your secrets, all your pain, all your regrets—and fully loved anyway.

Imagine that friend is royalty, and you’re nothing but a peasant. Yet you’re heard and deeply treasured (Romans 5:8).

Now imagine going to that friend with all your worries, all your insecurities, all your shortcomings . . . and your friend cares for you, encourages you, and equips you to step back out into the world.

That’s God.

Despite your fears and flaws, He knows everything about you (Psalm 139), cherishes you (Matthew 14:14), and equips you for the days ahead.

Prayer is not flinging words into the abyss, hoping they stick somewhere, or shouting at the sky, hoping your voice is loud enough to reach God.

Instead, prayer is a conversation with your Heavenly Father—and He listens to your laundry list of requests, your rambling, and your thankfulness without complaint.

And then He acts.

4. It’s Okay That I Don’t Know

Even though I’ve read the Bible numerous times, I’m still baffled by how much I have to learn.

If you came to me with your questions, I would probably keep saying, “I don’t know.”

I don’t know why friends hurt, why relationships have tension, why finances are tight, why there’s so much conflict in the world.

Even though I could quote Romans 8:28 or show you Bible stories (like Joseph’s, in which God orchestrated his life from son to slave to instrument of salvation) or tell of how He’s been there for me again and again, I don’t imagine that’s enough to calm your fears.

But in the end, the truth doesn’t change: “God knows why. But I’m not Him, so I don’t.

I have faith in the truth. That God is sovereign, good, and just. He loves us beyond any human love. He has promised to work good out in our lives and there’s evidence of Him fulfilling this promise.

He spoke the universe into existence and decorated the dark sky with stars. He breathed life into humans, gave them free will, and offered salvation. He sees all, knows all, and still has an undying love for His broken creation.

So, no, I don’t have the perfect answer.

I might not even have an answer beyond “I don’t know.”

But I trust the perfect One who has all the answers. And that’s enough for me as I grow in knowledge and live for Him.

That’s a wrap!

This is a beautiful post, Alyssa! I’ve been thinking lately on the fact that I don’t have all the answers—and it’s okay that I don’t, because God does and it’s my job to trust Him. Almost exactly what you said!
It makes me think of a song called Lead Me On by Chandler Moore. In verse 2, he says, “I may not have it all quite figured out. But I don’t think it matters, I think you like it that way.”
It’s so true! Thank you for writing these beautiful and truthful posts 💛

Yes, I love seeing how God is faithful even when I’m doubting. Thank you for the encouragement, Leah, and for sharing your thoughts!

Amen to that first point! That’s so true, and something I need to remember
