Have you ever wished you were a Christian hero?

While making a list of possible Bible figures for this week’s post, I came across some awesome men and women of faith—people who did amazing things for God.

These people glorified Him in their lives and their deaths, lived for Him and loved like Him, and changed the trajectory of the future just by following their calling.

Without Esther’s courage or Moses’ faithfulness, an entire people group would have been crushed. Without the judges’ willingness, the Israelites wouldn’t have chased God over and over again. Without wise and righteous kings, the nation of Israel would’ve fallen apart and served other gods.

The Bible tells the stories of people who didn’t always think God could use them—but then He shaped them into characters who would glorify His name for generations. These are people we talk about today in Bible studies and Sunday Schools because they were so faithful to Christ, yet many of them didn’t think they were adequate.

Maybe that’s the beautiful part—that the stories of God’s people were never about them. They were always about God and how He fixes broken vessels like us.

They Were Not Perfect

Just like us, those heroes of the faith weren’t perfect.

At some point, each of them got into an argument, stole something, or told a lie. At some point, some of them would have claimed to be “too far gone”.

They’re perfect examples of how God uses imperfect people.

Some saved an entire nation while others saved eight sinful people and some stinky animals. Nobody was perfect. Think of David, Noah, or Peter. All of them made huge mistakes.

But the weird thing is. . .they’re still “men of great faith”. They’re praised even though they were imperfect, and they glorified God despite their mistakes.

That means you don’t have to be the “perfect Christian”, either. Sure, we’re told to be ambassadors, to love well, and to preach the good news—but even when we mess up and hurt some people, we can still do world-changing things.

They Were Better with God

Without God, the Christian heroes would have been complete nobodies.

Sure, Esther could have stayed the beautiful queen of her nation. Moses could have lived lavishly in the Egyptian palace. Noah could have told the story as “I built a boat in the middle of the desert, and that is the only reason God couldn’t destroy me!”

But without God, they couldn’t have done impossible things for themselves, God, or others.

Even though we make mistakes, God loves us. Which is crazy, if you think about it—that love could transcend all our failures and mistakes.

Without God, these people would be aimless. But with Him? They’re made with a purpose, a promise, a future. As Christians, they become new creations, they’re atoned, and they are His children.

You Could Be a Christian Hero

That same story could be told for you one day. That without Him, you were a nobody. But through Him? He died for you, atoned your sins, made you a new creation, and you are called His chosen, precious, beloved child.

He writes your story with His fingertips. He rescues you when you call. He urges you to change hearts, and He gives you the tools to serve, glorify, and showcase Him.

With Him, you are so much more and so much less than you could ever imagine.

By writing your story, He tells future generations of His purpose intertwined with yours.

“But I’ve messed up!” you say. “I’m not worthy, and I’m not strong enough. I’m not enough!”

It’s a harsh but beautiful truth because you’re probably right. After all, I’m not enough on my strength. Neither are any pastors, missionaries, Bible figures, or Christian heroes.

Only Christ was, is, and will forever be enough.

And He’s not finished writing your story.
