Normal water sustains life. Humans can only go three days without it before perishing. It fills creeks, lakes, rivers, and oceans. Water douses fire, floods us with nutrients and health, and forms landmarks. Dehydration causes headaches and confusion while being hydrated keeps you healthy. But living water?

Living water has many of the same functions as the normal stuff you and I take from the tap—just for your soul.

John 4 records a day when Jesus stopped in a city that Jews avoided because of religious differences. Jesus asked a woman for a drink.

She scoffed. Guffawed. Stifled her chuckle.

Well, okay—the Bible doesn’t mention that part, but her words do express disbelief and you can imagine how ridiculous the situation seemed. She knew Jesus was a Jew. He was a man. At the hottest part of the day, when only the women avoiding public scorn would go to the well.

He wasn’t supposed to be talking to her.

And she told Him that.

He said, “If you knew the gift of God, and who it is who says to you, ‘Give Me a drink,’ you would have asked Him, and He would have given you living water.” (John 4:10)

What is living water? What does it do?

The Sustainer of Life

Just like our bodies need water, our souls need God. Over half of the human body has water in it. And our souls need to be full of God. He gives us breath, heals any worry, and shoulders our burdens.

Keeps You Running Smoothly

Remember how I said we need water to stay focused? Without that clear liquid coursing through us, we have trouble doing anything smoothly. God can handle every situation in the best way possible.

Gets Rid of the Bad Stuff

When we take God in and repent, He removes all that nasty gunk—our sin—and makes us clean.

Adds a Glow

Water is necessary for proper skin care. When we’re hydrated, our skin looks good, and there’s almost a glow.

The Holy Spirit has the same effect—not on our physical body but our spiritual one. We’re filled with peace, hope, love, and a renewed sense of purpose when we drink from Him. Drink enough, and the whole world—even strangers—will be able to see a difference in you.

Universal Need

It’s impossible to survive very long without water. Every human needs it.

We can’t survive without repentance in God, either. No soul is healthy, alive, or hydrated unless God, the living water, is in you.

Need Water? Ask Jesus

Everyone needs Jesus. Everyone needs a drink from the fountain of life. Everyone needs life-sustaining water.

After the debate Jesus had with the Samaritan woman over water, He told her the things she had done and sins she had committed—likely the very source of becoming the village joker.

And He still offered her salvation.

It’s refreshing to know that we can’t earn salvation, but Jesus gives it to us anyway, simply because He wants us to live. In John 7:37–38, Jesus said, “If anyone thirsts, let him come to Me and drink. He who believes in Me, as the Scripture has said, out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.”

Do you know someone who is thirsty?

Do they want to believe?

Jesus wants you and your friends, family, neighbors, enemies, and acquaintances—everyone you know—to take a drink and live.
