The church needs you—a humble and capable servant, ready to use your unique spiritual gift in some capacity. But sometimes, it’s hard to know how to serve the church. But for starters, here are eight ideas.

1. Make Some Noise

Do you play an instrument? Has anyone ever complimented your singing? Consider joining your church’s music team to lead the congregation in worship (Acts 16:25).

2. Behind-the-Scenes

Do you prefer hiding in the shadows over being onstage? There are many ways to serve without being blinded by raging fans—set up or tear down tables, clean up spills, run the lights and sound, or mow the lawn. Are you good at design? Make posters or presentations. Any need you see that you can meet, go for it (Hebrews 6:10)!

3. Greet and Usher

Does your smile light up a room? If so, then maybe you’d be great at greeting people at the door to offer a hearty “Good day,” pleasant smile, and good directions to the best seat in the house (1 Timothy 1:1–2). Good name memory is undoubtedly a bonus but not a must.

4. Sunday School Assistant

Think you’ll enjoy teaching, motherhood, or running a daycare? Then here’s the perfect job for you! Assist one of the older teachers or run a class yourself (Proverbs 22:6).

5. Group Leader

Have you ever considered starting a Bible club just for your peers? For example, you could form a prayer, study, or discussion group. There are fascinating books you could also look into as guides.

5. Meet Emotional Needs

Do you have a knack for noticing when people are hurting? Ask how they’re doing and show you care (Ephesians 4:32) or strike up a conversation about something as simple as sports.

Even in a church, people still feel lonely—your smile, generous words, and listening ear could genuinely brighten their day.

6. Send Cards

Is it infinitely easier to write that you care than to say it in person? You’d be surprised how much a simple “Praying for you” card can mean to someone.

7. Bake

Do you love to bake? Make a batch of cookies or loaf of bread for someone stuck at home but would love to know someone is thinking of them. It’s also a great way to bribe visitors into coming back!

Hand-deliver your tasty treat straight to their home, and maybe they’ll invite you inside for a bite of it and a conversation.

8. Organize Events

Have you shown exceptional delegation skills? Maybe this is your opportunity to shine the light on Jesus by putting together potlucks, showers, or receptions. After all, we’re not forbidden to celebrate. But don’t forget what it takes to be a good leader.

1 Corinthians 12:5 "There are differences of ministries, but the same Lord."

Think you’re not capable of serving? Think again. God has called you to use your spiritual gift to benefit the church.

When you work with a humble servant’s heart, hoping to bless others and honor God while not expecting anything in return, that’s when your light can shine exceptionally bright.
